In Good Hands
Description
In Good Hands is a program of Cascadia Composers, a Portland-based group of composers whose members offer students a hands-on opportunity to play their compositions with individual guidance by the composer. (Click for the program from the 2026 In Good Hands recital).
To participate in In Good Hands, the student should review the composition list with their teacher to select a piece they like at their level. This list has audio files to help choose a piece. The teacher should contact Paul Safar to request permission from the composer to play their piece and to link the composer with the student for tips on performing the piece.
In some cases, a composer will create a bespoke composition for a student. Please contact Paul Safar for this as well (this opportunity is only offered on a case-by-case basis and requires a special request).
Eugene District Composition Festival
Description
The District Composition Festival is Eugene’s contribution to the State composition festival. It is adjudicated but non-competitive (see section on Adjudication below). Composers of especially meritorious compositions are invited to participate at the state level.
Compositions
Copmpositions must be written by the student composer. The teacher will need to submit a copy (.pdf preferred) of the student’s manuscript, and a recording of the piece (mp3, etc.) Compositions may be in any style and for any instrumentation. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and big congratulations following the recital. More detailed instructions will be on the entry form.
Multimedia performances are welcomed. Please inform the chairs about this or any other performance that needs special attention, or if you have any questions.
Adjudication
Our adjudicator is Lisa Neher. The Composition Festival is a non-competitive event, but students whose compositions show a particular merit will be awarded Honored Composer status and will be invited to participate in the State Composition Festival held in June. The adjudication does not include evaluation of the performance, just the composition.
Adults are welcome
Please note that there is a category for Adults for this event. Adult compositions may be selected as notable and included in the final (Statewide) honors recital.

Registration
Registration is through Regista, which is accessed through the OMTA website. Teachers should do the following:
Log in to your OMTA account.
Click on your “Regista Dashboard”.
Click the Festivals tab and filter for Eugene.
Find 2027 Composition Festival /In Good Hands – Eugene (not available until February 2027)
Click on the green registration link under the entry.
Enter your student(s).
PLEASE NOTE: you can register and edit your students at different times, but you pay (online) all at once and everything is then locked down so no edits are possible. ABSOLUTELY NO REGISTRATIONS ARE POSSIBLE AFTER THE DEADLINE.
Memorization
Memorization for the performance is encouraged but not required.
